100th Day Photos

The children had a wonderful 100th Day on Friday. Students enjoyed their 100th Day snack and went through the 100 Day centers. As they visited each station they added 10 dots to their hat, 10 paint dots to their 100th day sheet, and 10 dots (gum balls) to their gum ball machine. We counted by 5's, 10's and 1's to 100. Students enjoyed singing and dancing! I hope you enjoy these pictures. We collected 149 cans! Thank you for all your can and food donations.

We are working hard!

During "Letter of the Day", as a whole group we have been sound-spelling 3 words beginning with the "Letter of the Day" and writing a sentence with one of the words.  Next week the students will be doing this activity independently.

In Math, we have been counting by 2's, 5's and 10's.  We also have been working in a "Number Galore" book.  In this book we discuss whether a number is even or odd.  We also are learning there are many ways to show a number.  We can show a number in words, by writing a numeral, with tally marks and in ten frames.  We are also are using addition to create the number.  Next week we will do many calendar activities and 100 activities to celebrate the 100th Day of School!

During writing time, students are working on writing sentences independently.  Students are having fun writing about the "Star of the Week".  We are also practing our sight words during this time.  We are building our sight words, graphing our sight words and finding them and writing them in sentences.  At the end of this sight word rotation, students should be able to read List 1 words quickly and write the words with little to no assistance.

Reminders

As of this morning we have 22 cans.  The cans we are collecting for the 100th Day of school will be donated to a local charity and our cans will be counted towards "Souper Bowl of Caring".  Please continue to donate canned goods.  Our goal is to have 100 by next Friday, the 100th Day of School!

6 Flags Reading Program

Your child brought home their 6 Flags Reading Log this past week.  The reading log is due back February 18th.  Your child will earn a free ticket to 6 flags, if they read or are read to for a total of 6 hours.  You may count the books that you read for the homework log.

100th Day!

On Friday, January 25, the children will be celebrating their 100th day of kindergarten.  We will need your help in providing items for our 100th day snack, bringing in canned goods and in creating a 100 day project to bring to school on that day.
Canned Goods:  On Monday, January 14th, students can start bringing in canned goods.  We will track how many cans we have each day on a 100s chart.  Our goal is to collect 100 canned goods per class to donate to a local area food bank.  The students can bring in cans throughout the entire month.
100th Day Project:  Please help your child create a 100 day t-shirt or sweatshirt to wear to school on the 100th day by putting 100 of anything on the shirt.  You may want to use fabric paint, crayons, or buttons – be creative!  If you prefer, you may make a collection of 100 things on a poster board.  Either one of these projects would be fine.
Please send in canned goods all month long.  Also, please send the 100 day project to school on the 100th day of school!  If we have any snow days between now and then we will adjust accordingly.    Thank you!

Guided Reading and Letter of the Day

Guided Reading
We started guided reading today.  Miss Heitmann will be coming to our classroom for 35 minutes each day to meet with reading groups also.  Your child will be meeting with either Miss Heitmann or myself throughout the week.  Students will be working in small groups and reading leveled books.  Students are very excited and did very well working independently at centers while other students were meeting in small groups.  Students are really enjoying the integration of I-pads into our literacy centers.

You can support what we are doing at school by continuing to practice and review sight words.  The sight words are important for literacy development.  When you are reading books at home, have your child look for sight words in stories.  Please ask your child to retell the stories they are reading to you or that you have read to them.  Discuss the characters and setting in the stories.

Letter of the Day
We have started our 3rd Rotation of the alphabet.  Students are working on brainstorming words independently and sound spelling these words.  Students are being expected to write these words in sentences.  We will complete the "Letter of the Day" worksheet as a whole group for the first week.  The following week students will be completing the worksheet more independently.  Some students will be focusing more on sentence writing, while other students may still focusing on sound spelling words independently.  I will level the activity to best meet your child's needs.

It was great to see all the students today.
